We love our science here at Veggie Eye and when science sheds a positive light on vegan & vegetarian lifestyles then we really want to shout about it and that is exactly what has happened recently as scientists in Spain have announced the results of a decade long study.
Researchers studied over 16,000 participants who were all given varied diets from high meat consumption to meat reducing over varied degrees, the result – and tbh of absolutely no surprise to any vegetarian or vegan – was that eating plenty of fresh veg whilst avoiding too much meat boosted the chances of being slim, hardly an earth shattering shock is it!
The overall results showed that flexitarians who consumed high amounts of vegetables, fruit, nuts, grains etc. are 43% less likely to be obese.
Professor Maira Bes-Rastrallo, from the university of Navarra said:
“It’s not a radical shift to a vegetarian diet” “our study suggests plant-based diets are associated with substantially lower risk of developing obesity. This supports recommendations to shift to diets rich in plant foods with fewer animal foods”
Veggie Eye says: Whilst the study offers a conclusive outcome that reducing meat and moving across to a plant-based lifestyle can vastly reduce obesity, in all honesty this is old news, people have been aware of the health benefits associated with the vegetarian/vegan/plant-based lifestyle for generations and more people than ever are making the decision to go veggie and/or vegan globally.
Becoming a vegan or vegetarian is not a radical shift in diet as suggested in the above statement by Professor Bes-Rastrallo, in fact it is more easier than ever to adopt the V lifestyle, but overall if more and more people can become flexitarian and make an active effort to reduce there meat consumption, then this can only be good news for the vegetarian & vegan populous as the bridge is firmly in place to make the smooth transition, sometimes little steps are required, this enables people to become better educated about there food and the health benefits associated.
